Problem: Roof rats have used the cables passing under a soffit vent to provide a platform to gnaw a hole in the vent for access.

Solution: Over screen soffit with hardware cloth.

Problem: Roof rats have gnawed through the wooden frame, cross beams and insect screen to gain access into a roof void.

Solution: Either replace vent with a stronger rodent proof style or screen with hardware cloth.

Problem: Norway rats have enlarged the bottom of a basement door, by burrowing and gnawing at the rotten wood.

Solution: Replace basement door, extend concrete threshold to ensure tight fit with door.

Problem: Rats have pulled out the insulation from underneath of the siding, to make a way into a crawl space.

Solution: Insert cut lumber into the gap between the siding and the foundation. Making sure not to leave gaps around pipes etc.

Problem: A missing crawl space vent, allowed rats direct access into a crawl space. The home owner tried (unsuccessfully) to fill the gap with polystyrene. Notice the missing styrofoam from the foundation and the dirty rub marks, from where rats have climbed up and down.

Solution: Install the correct crawl space vent.

Problem: Roof rats have enlarged a hole in a roof tile.

Solution: Patch tile and periodically inspect roof until the roof is replaced.

Problem: Roof rats have gnawed the electrical cables, in an attempt to extract the chemical in the cable.

Solution: Have an electrician replace the cable(s) and inspect all of the household circuits.

Problem: Rats entered the living quarters of a cabin, via the pipes under the bath. Then decided to gnaw a hole in a mattress.

Solution: Find out how they are getting in to the living quarters. Set up traps and close all access holes. Replace damaged furniture.
