Raccoons
Deterents
If a raccoon has moved in to an attic or crawl space, try to exclude them when they are away from the den or change the environment, so that they decide to move on their own. Use mothballs wrapped in an old sock, or rags soaked in household ammonia, To encourage raccoons to leave, you can try motion sensitive lights or a radio (they don’t like noise and light). A water scarecrow which squirts out a jet of water may stop the raccoon from coming near to the building. The position of the water scarecrow should be moved every couple of weeks.
Around the entrance of their den, try sprinkling Cayenne pepper or spray a repellent, such as Repel, predator urine, or a mixture of two tablespoons of Tabasco sauce to one quart of water. If raccoons are pulling up shingles or fascia boards, exclude them with heavy wire screening (hardware cloth). Cover potential access points with wire screening. Make sure crawl spaces doors fit properly and are secure. Raccoons are excellent climbers. Keep trees away from buildings and over hanging branches cut back. If a tree cannot be removed, place a piece of tin, loosely around the trunk in an upside down funnel shape.
Trapping
Trapping and transporting a raccoon more than 500 metres is not permitted, even with a licence issued by the BC Ministry of the Environment. Raccoon control should be limited to excluding them from buildings using the methods described above. If a raccoon has entered a building, then if necessary they may be live-trapped and held in the traps for a few hours while their entrances to the building are sealed. Excluding them from buildings cannot be performed when there is any danger of trapping young inside buildings.
How can we help?
Sunshine Coast Pest Control ltd has years of experience with removing and excluding raccoons from buildings. We can provide you with an estimate for raccoon proofing or cleaning up the mess left by raccoons. Unfortunately we can no longer assist with the relocation of a raccoon more than 500 metres from your home, but can provide a live trap to hold the raccoon, whilst the building is sealed and the animal released nearby.
